During the Vijayanagar Empire in the 15-16th century Hampi was the capital city of one of the largest Hindu empires in Indian history, with over half a million inhabitants. Today the population is less than one thousand.

 

Today Hampi is a holy place and visited by thousands of hindu pilgrims.
